So I’m Leaving Cholula
The last roomie left early this morning. Me and my friend Maarje from Holland have tickets for Campeche on the Gulf Coast for 8 pm tonight. I’m packed and ready. But while I’ll be back in Cholula to pick up some bags I’m leaving with my landlord, this is my last full day here.
Top 5 things I’ll miss about Cholula:
1) My landlords- Gustavo (the lover of bells) and his wife, Fatima, are pretty much the nicest people you would ever want to meet. They’ve been building a 4th story on the apartment building and the room is going to be an open recreation room for tenets. They’re calling it “La Cueva de los Abuelos”- the Grandparent’s Cave. Gustavo also has a conspiracy theory that the swine flu was planted in Mexico City when Obama was here about a month ago as to distract Americans from the failing economy. His wife laughs at him when he says this.
2) That feeling of coming home after traveling.
3) Riding my bike to the market and knowing exactly where in the cavernous building to get the best cheese.
4) At dusk when the smog clears out, Popo and Itza, the nearby volcanoes are silhouetted by the sun and the lights on the creamy yellow church, the highest point in town, light up and you remember why you’re here.
5) Daytime fireworks.
