Cuetzalan

5)    Just the humid hilly atmosphere of Cuetzalan. I wrote this while I was there. Funny how this came right before the swine flu terror.:

Cuetzalan gives you that feeling when you’re standing on something tall- a cliff, a roof, an overhang- where you immediately imagine yourself falling. There’s no escaping it, it’s impossible to see the view, you can only see yourself brains splattered and dead on the rocks or street below. Your stomach falls a bit, the blood in your feet jumps back up your veins, but Cuetzalan, Cuetzalan is that feeling you get right after the initial terror. The realization that everything is going to be OK. Your body is secure and will not plummet to its death, that yes, you can stand here, safely, and see everything before you clearly, for miles. So that when the street lamps turn on lighting up ferns and the fog rolls in muffling the noisy birds and palms and bicycle wheels like how is does in Cuetzalan, it takes on that same feeling that yes, everything is going to be OK.
